The SSC (Staff Selection Commission) typing test is the final hurdle for lakhs of aspirants every year. Unlike aptitude exams, the typing test has very specific rules — and not understanding them is one of the most common reasons candidates fail.

SSC Typing Test: Official Rules

  • •Duration: 10 minutes (CHSL Data Entry Operator, Lower Division Clerk)
  • •Speed requirement: 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi
  • •Accuracy requirement: Error percentage must be below 5%
  • •Software used: Official SSC exam software (TypeClutch's simulator mimics this)
  • •Input method: Standard QWERTY keyboard — no special keyboards allowed

How SSC Marks Are Deducted

This is the most misunderstood part. SSC uses a word-level error system — not a character-level system. Any word that is typed incorrectly (even one wrong character) counts as one full error.

⚠️In the SSC scoring system, each error word incurs a penalty of 10 key depressions from your gross score. This means a single typo can cost you more than just the character — it penalises the entire word.
  1. 1Gross WPM = Total key depressions ÷ 5 ÷ time in minutes
  2. 2Net WPM = (Gross key depressions − error penalties × 10) ÷ 5 ÷ time
  3. 3Error % = (Total error words ÷ total source words) × 100
  4. 4Result: Pass if Net WPM ≥ 35 AND Error % ≤ 5%

TypeClutch SSC Simulator

TypeClutch has a dedicated SSC Exam Simulator mode that replicates the word-level scoring system exactly. After each test, it shows you Omitted Words, Substituted Words, Added Words, and your exact Net WPM using the SSC formula.

4-Week SSC Typing Preparation Plan

Week 1 — Foundation (Focus: Touch Typing)

  • •Learn all keys by touch — no looking at keyboard
  • •Practice 20 minutes daily on TypeClutch Words mode
  • •Target: 25 WPM with 95%+ accuracy
  • •Daily SSC simulator test to track error %

Week 2 — Accuracy (Focus: Zero Errors)

  • •Switch to Paragraphs mode — harder, closer to real exam passages
  • •Slow down deliberately to eliminate errors
  • •Target: 30 WPM with 98%+ accuracy
  • •Use AI Coach drills for your 3 weakest keys

Week 3 — Speed Building

  • •Increase pace — push 5 WPM faster than comfortable each session
  • •Mix 30s, 60s, and 2-minute tests throughout the day
  • •Target: 38 WPM with 96%+ accuracy
  • •Full 10-minute SSC simulator test daily

Week 4 — Exam Simulation

  • •Full 10-minute SSC simulator test twice daily
  • •No looking at keyboard under any circumstances
  • •Target: 40+ WPM with error % under 3%
  • •Review error patterns and drill specifically
💡On exam day: read the passage before you start typing. Understanding the context helps your fingers anticipate words before you see them — this alone can add 3–5 WPM.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • •Correcting every error immediately — this wastes more time than leaving it
  • •Rushing in the first minute and slowing down due to fatigue
  • •Ignoring punctuation — SSC passages contain commas, periods, and quotes
  • •Not practicing on a full keyboard (no numpad shortcuts)
  • •Practising only on TypeClutch — also practice on the official SSC software if you can access it
